This blog series will be your companion on building a robust Crisis Management (CM) project plan. Over the next ten steps, we will delve into the specifics of crafting a roadmap that will help you weather the storm and emerge stronger on the other side.
Note that this is phase one of the Crisis Management Planning Methodology. It is useful to understand the differences between starting a project, which is project management, and implementing a crisis management program, which is the seven phases of planning methodology.
This is a series of blogs to provide a fundamental understanding of the entire CM project planning (CMP) process. Before the project starts, the designated Organisation's CM Coordinator or appointed project manager must understand the business.
CM plans are often built around technology and do not address business needs. This is especially the case in emerging economies. Understanding your corporate business goals and direction is the first step.
You must understand crisis management and its planning process before seeking Executive Management sponsorship, even though they may have mooted the idea.
As today's CM is much more than merely "preparing for the crisis to occur," it is crucial to understand the fundamental CM principles concerning prevention, protection, availability, and continuity. It would also be worthwhile for you to keep abreast of the CM industry trends, direction, available tools, and the industry's "best practice" strategy recommendations.
All of these help you to develop your inner vision and goals.
The objective of the Project Management phase is to kick off the CMP project in your organization. It is primarily used to educate your Executive Management about the purpose, process and importance of CM planning.
What Does Project Management Entail?
The entire project planning process for crisis management (may not be in the order of implementation) involves the following steps:
- Step 1: Establish the need for CM
- Step 2: Research Your Work
- Step 3: Develop a CM Framework
- Step 4: Define the Scope, Objectives, and Assumptions
- Step 5: Manage the CM Planning Process
- Step 6: Establish a CM Steering Committee and Project Planning Team
- Step 7: Develop an Action Plan and Schedule
- Step 8: Establish a Budget for CM
- Step 9: Obtain Commitment and Approval
- Step 10: Manage Deadlines and Milestones
- Step 11: Build and Maintain Teamwork
