If you are reading this article, you are probably appointed as a Crisis Management Team Leader, a Business Continuity Management (BCM) Manager, or an Organization BCM Coordinator. You could also hold other functional roles in operations, security, facility, corporate planning, or health and safety.
If this is correct, being competent in your current role is insufficient; you must clearly distinguish and understand the concept of CM versus BCM versus your current functional roles.
One option is to attend a comprehensive Crisis Management (CM) course taught by expert CM practitioners and be certified as one after completing it.
At BCM Institute, we have three levels of competencies: "Know-Do-Manage." As an appointed organisation-level CM Coordinator, you must be at the "Manage" level of competency. With this in mind, the organisation's CM coordinator can start to plot the different training routes to choose from depending on his/her requirements, schedule, and certification needs.
Other Core Skillsets
Once you have completed the CM training, you should continue to upgrade your competency to include business continuity management and crisis communication. Another core skill is to be able to review and audit a BCM program. The auditing skill set will also apply to the review of crisis management and crisis communication plans. For those who are required to work with the IT team and have a strong IT background, the attendance of the IT disaster planning course will be a good selection.
Certification Versus Competency-based Training
You may want to ignore this section if you are not a Singaporean or a Singapore Permanent Resident (PR). This funding applies if you are a Malaysian citizen.
BCM Institute is awarded Authorised Training Organisation (ATO) status for its "Competency-based Courses" certification course and Approved Training Centre. However, these are only available in Singapore. The Malaysian government's HRD Corporation also funds them.
If you are a Malaysian and are eligible for HRD Corp funding, these courses are also funded by the Malaysian government.

Support in the Implementation of the Crisis Management Programme
Often, existing or newly appointed CM Managers will approach BCM Institute to assist in updating and implementing the CM project or program. If the consulting fee is not affordable or approved, you may seek to implement it via the training-led implementation approach with government funding.
Please approach our colleagues, who will customise the review and initiation of the CM program and allow the program to be funded by government agencies.
The course CM-420 Initiating Crisis Management Program will be implemented to kick off and review the program, which is based on the ISO 22316 CM standard.
Funding from the Singapore and Malaysia Governments
There is funding for the training of CM in Singapore from two separate government agencies. In Singapore, both are funded by SkillFuture Singapore (SSG). In Malaysia, it is supported by the HRD Corp.
