What is a BCM Learning Roadmap?

Mostly overlooked in the Business Continuity Management (BCM) field as one of the contributing factor to sustain an effective BCM program is training and continuous learning.  The provision for appropriate and adequate BCM training for personnel with BCM responsibilities, will ensure that the BCM program is operational and ready to response to a disruption.  The key is to develop its learning roadmap for its entire organisation starting from those who are directly involved in the program management at both corporate levels and also at the business unit level, and senior management to the general staff members.

What is A Training and Learning Roadmap?

Year RoadmapIn the BCM context, a "Training and Learning Roadmap", to be referred hereafter as “Learning Roadmap”, is a map to identify the order of learning, training and experiences that can be developed to attain BCM competency. The learning roadmap is used to groom employees specifically BCM practitioners and employees supporting the program, to the next level of their specialization and as a progression from a “novice” to an “expert” BCM professional.

When it comes to corporate governance, management within most organisations had recognized that BCM is a key component of an enterprise risk management program. Nevertheless, employees ranging from senior management to the general staff members, supply chain partners and clients are unaware of the existence of the BCM program or their role within the BCM effort. It begs the questions that the confidence that this BC plan that is supposed to ensure the survivability of the organisation is workable if key stakeholders are unaware of their roles, response and recovery responsibilities?

Current Situation with BCM Implementation

The implementation of BCM is to improve an organisation’s resilience has seen a growing number of organisations having an increased awareness of the importance of BCM. Great strides have been made in incorporating BCM practices in their daily operations.

This is apparent from the growing number of companies getting their organisational BCM certification or getting a team set up to ensure that they have a BCM in place and have the BCM plan aligned to the worldwide BCM standard, the ISO 22301 BCMS standard. Before embarking on their BCM journey and upon initial analysis, it is observed that organisations fall into two groups; the first group do not actively monitor and manage their BC program, while the other group, despite acknowledging the importance of managing it, find that progress is difficult beyond the initial year of implementation.

Steps to Setting A Roadmap for BCM Sustainability

While both groups understand the need to manage and upkeep their BCM program and to keep it relevant to the organisation, most are at a loss as to what needs to be done and how it is done.

The key is for the appointed BCM manager or Organisation BCM Coordinator, to address this issue and serves as a guide for the various parties within an organisation to choose their BC training journey.

Diagram 1 BWThe BCM roadmap must first identifies and clarifies the roles and responsibilities of different parties within the organisation participating in the BCM program. Once a individual role has been identified, references are made to each roles’ competency needs and its recommended training journey. This roadmap should also acknowledges the need for training of general staff that may not be directly involved in BCM but nonetheless; need to know their role in times of a disaster.
