Step 6: Establish a BC Planning Organization

Establishing a dedicated Business Continuity Planning (BCP) organization is a pivotal step in safeguarding an organization’s resilience and ensuring its ability to withstand disruptive events. This step marks a significant commitment to prioritizing business continuity and operational resilience.

By creating a specialized team, organizations can effectively coordinate BCP activities, allocate resources, and drive a culture of preparedness throughout the enterprise. This dedicated structure facilitates efficient planning, implementation, and maintenance of BCP strategies, ultimately enhancing the organization’s capacity to respond to and recover from unforeseen challenges.

A well-structured BCP organization provides the necessary expertise and focus to develop and implement comprehensive business continuity plans. Identify a Planning Committee and Team

  • BCP Steering Committee
  • Organization BCM Coordinator
  • BU BCM Coordinators
  • Support Unit BCM Coordinators for:
    • People
    • Technology
    • Facilities
    • Logistics
  • Internal and External Consultants

Types of Organization

Organizations often have difficulty differentiating between the BCP project and recovery organisations. I strongly advise you to design the organization to transform or map directly to the recovery organization once the project is completed.

Once the BCP Project is completed, the BCP Project Organization is transformed into a BC Recovery Organization.

Clear Terms of Reference (TOR)

The Terms of Reference for a BCP project can be compared to the syllabus for a course of study. Without an agreed syllabus, you will not know what you will be tested on, and the chance of passing is negligible. The Project Management phase is the lead-up to an exam and the exam itself.

You need to know what is expected of you, what specific authority you have, and what your limits are. All too often, an organization starts with an ill-defined position, which is the first step to possible failure.
