Crisis Leadership Needed During Pandemic Outbreak

Crisis Leadership Needed During Pandemic Outbreak

Pandemic Influenza (PF) and Infectious Diseases (ID) Outbreaks, and other crisis scenarios like Terrorist attacks, bomb explosions, fire - all these possible crisis scenarios and more should be covered within the Crisis Management Plan in preparation of the senior management handling of the crisis at the organisation level.

Crisis Leadership

Crisis leadership must have some of these guiding principles:

  • Have a leader who can lead decisively
  • Able to continuously embrace new information and evolve and re frame the crisis
  • Communicate constantly to all internal and external stakeholders
  • Be prepared for the unexpected
  • Navigate confusing data and chaos and be able to make sense on actions to be taken

What Crisis Leadership is Needed for this Pandemic Outbreak?

However, is that enough? Just because the organization has a detailed set of procedures for a PF-ID outbreak does not mean anything if the people in charge of executing those procedures don't know what to do.

  • Who is the best person to lead the crisis management team?
  • What is the crisis management team in-charged of?
  • What critical decisions to be made at each stage of the outbreak?
  • What specific directions and instructions to the business continuity and pandemic preparedness team?
