[OR] [P1-S3] Develop Strategy Roadmap in Operational Resilience

A strategy roadmap is a link between strategy and execution. It visualizes the critical outcomes of the operational resilience effort that must be delivered over a particular time horizon to achieve the organization’s strategic vision.

The outcomes on the strategy roadmap are substantiated by a clear understanding of the organization’s capabilities; gaps and priorities must be addressed.  Hence, an organisation must start with a clear operational resilience vision and strategy.

This blog [OR-P1-S3] elaborates on the content for Stage 3 of the "PLAN" phase or P1 of the OR Planning Methodology.

Course Participants: This blog is a pre-reading for the Operational Resilience Expert Implementer course participants.

Certification Application: The "How To" section is designed to assist successful participants in completing their Certification Application Form or CAF.

How to Develop an Operational Resilience Strategy Roadmap?

The first step in implementing operational resilience is to develop a comprehensive strategy and roadmap. This involves:

Assess Current State

OR Blog Perfoming Gap AnalysisConduct a thorough assessment of the organization's current operational resilience capabilities, including existing processes, technology infrastructure, and risk management practices. Identify any gaps or areas for improvement.

This is conducted during the previous stage, "Perform Gap Analysis."

Define Objectives

Clearly articulate the objectives of the operational resilience program.

These objectives should align with the organization's overall business goals and risk appetite.

Examples of objectives may include minimizing the impact of disruptions, ensuring timely recovery, and maintaining regulatory compliance.

Engage Stakeholders
  • Engage key organisational stakeholders, including senior management, business units, IT, risk management, and compliance.
  • Seek their input and involvement in the development of the strategy and roadmap.

This will help ensure buy-in and support throughout the implementation process.

Develop Roadmap
  • Create a detailed roadmap that outlines the specific initiatives, milestones, and timelines for implementing operational resilience.
  • Prioritise the initiatives based on their impact and feasibility.
  • Consider factors such as resource availability, budget constraints, and regulatory requirements.
