The proliferation of mobile devices has increased the complexity of IT DR.  Businesses may want to examine this trend affecting IT disaster recovery (IT DR).   When it comes to determining the IT strategy and investment especially in the choice of its recovery solutions, a business needs to match operational needs to ensure that its backup schedule, storage space, and other related strategies meet the schedules and needs of every staff members, from the back office and IT support to the front offices.  Hence, it is imperative that both the senior management from the businesses and IT  understand the trends that may affect their future investment in building their IT DR capability.

From an IT DR standpoint, the "always available by your side" mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets facilitates the continuation of IT operations and business processes even after a disaster strikes. With ever ready mobile devices steadily taking over the world, its impact on IT organizations especially the way we look at IT disaster recovery. To meet ever growing IT infrastructure needs and to ensure business continuity in case of a site-level disaster, it is critical to have live mobility and fully automated, efficient disaster recovery (DR) processes for virtualized enterprise applications across data centers. Failure to have a robust and efficient mobility and fully automated disaster recovery solution can result in millions of dollars of lost revenue and employee productivity.

Work from Home and Usage of Personal Devices

It is becoming a common practice for organisation to allow their staff members to work from home.  When working from home, a power or Internet outage can be more than just inconvenient.  However, with the use of mobility devices, its usage will be less impacted by the outages.  The downside is that the data usage of personal devices is not chargeable to the organisation as the money is paid out of the employees' pocket. Hence, organisation are beginning the weigh the pros and cons and when it formulates a IT DR backup or business continuity plan,  it will inevitable have to consider the usage of personal devices out of office environment.

One of the positive impacts of the prevalence of mobile devices is that it gives people a greater ability to work remotely and communicate using their devices in an emergency.

Often in a disaster event, employees may not be able to get to the office and instead could end up working from their homes and even at coffee shops or anyplace with an Internet connection.

Create Better Business Opportunity

Having access to all the needed tools and communication through a disaster is everything. Organisation can continue on business as usual.  With the aid of better mobility, the organisation can increase its business opportunity.  Most customers and potential ones would like to be able to:

  • collaborate with colleagues and customers in a disaster situation.
  • give them the assurance that your organisation is able to fill their needs even when a disruption had occurred to you.  
  • know that you as their provider can continue offering services in the area
  • have a level of assurance that your employees are doing their job with easy to use, access anywhere technology to support them

The mobile device proliferation has also increased the complexity of IT DR slightly as this trends increase.   Now, it will be important that organisation remember to back up employees’ mobile devices as well. When disaster strikes, it will likely be mobility that helps a business quickly get back to work.
