IC_BL-DR-3_Mod1Pre-reading [BL-DR-5] [M1-S2]  There is a trend of organisation moving away from the traditional DR toward DR on the cloud.  These are some of the rationales as highlighted in the blog.

When implementing IT DR, the continuous changes to the IT landscape and users' preference should be reviewed constantly.  The COVID-19 outbreak will become the largest impetus for IT DR to evolve to another level.

DRaaS Versus Traditional DR

What are the advantages of DraaS when matched against traditional DR? What can DR on the cloud give that the old methods fail to provide? Price is the most immediate and obvious talking point between the two methods.

IC_DR_DRaaS Versus Traditional DR

Traditional DR

Traditional DR demands exorbitant prices for the most responsive IT services, which may include a complete duplication of the hardware in the main site, the costs of a backup site, tape devices and media, as well as the necessary software to ensure synchronous duplication of the data.

Additionally, complex licensing paths may also force the use of specialists to decipher it, incurring, even more, expenses.

Cloud DR

Cloud DR has little of that as required by Traditional DR.  Maintenance expenses fall under the purview of the service provider, rather than the receiver. Organizations only have to pay for the resources they consume, rather than spend money on needlessly maintaining systems that could very well be only used once per year. It is a far superior viable option, as well as highly elastic; the ability to offload everything to the cloud makes it much easier.

Argument

This is just an introductory discussion on the moving away from traditional to Cloud DR.  There are many argument for and against but there are other variable namely, investment and obsolesce of expensive old technology that is still working.
