An Industry Guide to Business Continuity Management for Educational Institutions

Business continuity management is a holistic management process that identifies potential impacts of threats and develops response plans.

The key objective is to increase an organisation's resilience to business disruptions and minimise such disruptions' effects. This is exceptionally crucial to any educational institution.

This book prepares you to understand the contents of the ISO 22301 BCM standard and how it is relevant to the educational industry. It also enables you to explain and articulate the requirements of ISO 22301 and apply them to an academic institution setting.

This book was formulated specifically for institutions of higher education
only. In this book, higher education refers to all post-secondary education,
training and research guidance at educational institutions. It includes ordinary universities and graduate schools, as well as shorter-term education and training institutions offering 2-3 years long courses, e.g., Junior colleges, polytechnics, and various forms of technical speciality schools.

The contents of this book are structured according to the phases of BCM
Planning Methodology. The BCM Planning Methodology is the planning
process for implementing any BC plan. There are seven phases, and this book will cover all the phases except the first and last phases – Project Management and Program Management, respectively.

There are differences in how private versus public, small versus large institutions, and primarily research-based or teaching institutions will
plan and adopt the actions described in this book. The relevance of this
book is dependent on the characteristics of an institution.

An Industry Guide to Business Continuity Management for Educational Institutions

This handbook is intended to be a reference written explicitly for the ISO 22301 BCM Standard. It aims to prepare novice and experienced BCM professionals for implementing a BC Plan and procedures, a BCM programme, and a BCMS.

Business continuity continues to be an evolving art, and it is relatively new compared to well-established practices such as law and accounting. It is also subject to dynamic technology and business changes in the 21st century. This handbook will highlight common and vital aspects of BCM and provide detailed elaboration concerning ISO 22301. It will also not delve into detailed project management aspects of implementing a BC Plan. Organisations intending to do so should enlist proper expertise before embarking on their BC projects or pursue further reading from the author’s BCM Series of books.

The approach adopted in this handbook is to present a series of phases based on the BCM Planning Methodology. These phases are cross-referenced closely with the stage within Clause 8 - Operations of the ISO 22301 standard. Completing the deliverables in each phase within the BCM Planning Methodology will result in formulating and implementing the BC plan and procedures.

This book consolidates assorted practices and critical ideas of BCM into a single
location. It attempts to clarify and link some of these practices and ideas,
thereby providing practitioners with a better overview of BCM and the ISO
22301 itself.
