BCM Project Management Steps
This blog is dedicated to providing a fundamental understanding of the entire BCM planning (BCP) process. Before the project starts, the Organization BCM Coordinator or appointed project manager needs to understand the business. All too often, BC plans are built around technology and do not address business needs. This is especially the case in emerging economies. Understanding your corporate business goals and direction is the first step.
You must understand BCP before seeking Executive Management sponsorship, even though they may have mooted the idea. As today's BCP is much more than merely "making a backup," it is crucial to understand the fundamental BCP principles concerning prevention, protection, availability, and continuity. It would also be worthwhile for you to keep abreast of the BC industry trends, direction, and available tools, along with the industry's "best practice" strategy recommendations. All of these help you to develop your inner vision and goals.
The objective of the Project Management phase is to kick off the BCP project in your organization. It is primarily used to educate your Executive Management about the purpose, process and importance of BC planning.
What Does Project Management Entail?
The entire project planning process (may not be in the order of implementation) involves the following steps:
- Step 1: Establish the need for BCP
- Step 2: Research Your Work
- Step 3: Develop a BCP Framework
- Step 4: Define the Scope, Objectives, and Assumptions
- Step 5: Manage the BC Planning Process
- Step 6: Establish a Steering Committee and Project Planning Team
- Step 7: Develop an Action Plan and Schedule
- Step 8: Establish a Budget
- Step 9: Obtain Commitment and Approval
- Step 10: Manage Deadlines and Milestones
- Step 11: Build and Maintain Teamwork
