[ITL] [1-6] Training-led BCM Implementation: Overview

This series is an overview of a 6 part reading for organisation BCM managers [or BCM project/program team leader and its members] designated who are keen to embark on or update an existing BCM implementation.

Organisations have two options to implement their BCM program.  One is to engage an external consultant to implement it. The second option is to implement it as an in-house project.

If budget permits, engaging an external consultant will be the quickest way to set up this BCM program. The challenge is then to maintain the program after the consultant has left.

This second option is to build competency for all involved in the BCM program, especially the management team and the business units, via a bite-size 5-step approach.  The time is programmed, and the deliverables can be managed.

Before the start of this project, the appointed BCM project management team will be trained to kick off the BCM project with the necessary preparation, which does not need the business unit's involvement.  If you already have an existing BCM programme, this stage will fill the gap based on the ISO22301 BCM system standard.  The program caters for compliance with other BCM regulatory requirements.

[ITL] [1-6] Training-led BCM Implementation: OverviewIf you are reading this blog, you are probably preparing to implement your BCM project or initiate a BCM program update for your organisation.

You face challenges completing the implementation or update within a reasonable budget.  What is being introduced to you in this article is to allow:

  • Organisation BCM Coordinatorthe Organisation BCM coordinator or OBC or the designated BCM Manager, to have a formal structure of the implementation project, click the icon for "OBC" definition
  • the appointed department or business unit (BU) BCM coordinators (BUCs) to be trained and be BCM competent click the icon for the "BUC" definition
  • Business Unit (BU) BCM Coordinatorat the same time for the BU BCM Coordinators to accurately complete and submit or update their unit-level inputs to the Organisation BCM coordinator for compilation.

One common concern if you are the appointed BCM project/ program manager or OBC is how you can better assess the accuracy of submitting the respective inputs from the BUCs? You need professional help to have a 2nd opinion on the submissions. Hence, the deployment of highly qualified BCM facilitators.

Remember this is a training course and not a consultancy project.  BCM Institute provides all non-training activities such as the review of contents and consultations as value-adding services, and it is not charged to the organisation.

This first part explains how the competency-based training course can be used to implement or update the BCM project and programme.

Training-led BCM Implementation.  This series is part of the reading for participants embarking on a BCM implementation or updating of the existing BCM programme using a combination of training facilitated by an experience BCM professional team to develop, implement and finalize its BCM program for an organisation.

BCM Planning MethodologyTime Commitment: Each BCM planning phase will be conducted as a series of online/onsite workshops, and each workshop is a 3-hour module.  Participants are expected to complete the template or update their unit's previous submission before attending the next workshop.

In the table "Training-led BCM Implementation" below, click the respective icons to learn more about the BCM implementation process.  The first row is the three-module set of training.  An example of the first module is BCM-310 (course code) which will meet the requirement for phase 2 (RAR) and Phase 3 (BIA) of the BCM planning methodology.

If you want more details about the course, such as the syllabus and the participant's expectations, read "Course Overview" and "Course Description".

Additional BCM Support Work.  When incorporating competency-based training as part of the overall BCM project, certain information is required to kick start a working framework for the engagement.

This includes one review of the RAR, BIA, BCS and PD submissions by the participants from each department.  The OBC can have the RAR, BIA, and BCS submissions compiled as a report and have one review provided before the end of the last training session.  This additional support work, if needed, will be taken up separately with BCM Institute's program team.

BCM Project Initiation Support Work

This is the 2-Day or four  3-hour online sessions to set up the BCM project.  It is an inventory check of the existing BCM and related documentation.  We recommend that the project team attend this course.
