Guidance Notes for Pre-Course Preparation on Operational Resilience

Introduction

Dear Participants,

To ensure a productive learning experience during the upcoming Operational Resilience Course, we kindly request that you complete the following pre-course preparation tasks. There are a total of six tasks.


These tasks will help you reflect on your organisation's approach to operational resilience and enable us to tailor the course content to your specific needs. 
Please find guidance notes for each task in the following PowerPoint slides.

 

Question 1

Briefly Share Your Approach to Implementing Operational Resilience in Your Organisation

  • Provide a concise overview of your organization's approach to implementing operational resilience. 

  • Consider factors such as your organisation's goals, strategies, and initiatives related to operational resilience. 

  • Highlight any frameworks, methodologies, or best practices your organisation has adopted. 

  • Share insights into the challenges faced and the progress made in enhancing operational resilience within your organization. 

  • Aim to present a high-level summary of your organisation's approach.

Types of Operational Disruptions Affecting Your Organisation

  • Identify and describe the types of operational disruptions that have affected your organisation in the past or have the potential to impact it in the future. 

    • These disruptions may include natural disasters, cyber incidents, supply chain disruptions, regulatory changes, or other relevant factors. 

    • Provide a brief overview of each disruption type and its potential impact on your organisation’s operations.

  • This will help you understand the specific challenges your organisation faces regarding operational resilience.

Terminology and Definitions in Your Organisation

  • Share the terminology and definitions related to operational resilience used within your organisation. 

    • If your organisation has a specific term for operational resilience, provide its definition and highlight any variations or differences from the commonly accepted definitions. 

  • Understanding the terminology and definitions used in your organisation will enable you to align your knowledge with the terminology used during the course.

Critical Business Services (CBS) in Your Organisation

  • Identify the name of the Critical Business Service (CBS) in your organisation. 

    • The CBS represents the key services or processes vital to your organisation's operations. 

    • Provide examples of CBS processes or key activities that your organisation has identified or could deploy for operational resilience. 

  • This will help you relate the concepts discussed in the course to the specific CBS within your organisation.

Examples of Impact Tolerance

  • Impact tolerance refers to the predetermined level of disruption or impact that an organisation is willing to accept for its Critical Business Services.

  • It helps organisations define their resilience objectives and prioritise their efforts to prevent, adapt, and recover from disruptions. 

  • Consider the following examples of impact tolerance:

    • Financial Transactions Processing

    • Supply Chain Management

Scenario Tests Conducted or Planned

  • Share details about any scenario tests that your organisation has conducted in the past to assess operational resilience or any tests that are planned for the future.

    • If no scenario tests have been conducted yet, outline any plans or expectations for conducting such tests. 

  • This will allow you to contribute insights and experiences during course discussions.

  • Identify the communication channels your organisation can deploy to enhance operational resilience. 

    • These channels should facilitate effective communication and coordination during operational disruptions. 

    • Examples may include emergency notification systems, dedicated communication apps, internal messaging platforms, or specific escalation and information dissemination protocols. 

  • Share the communication channels used or planned in your organisation and their relevance to operational resilience.
