What is Strategy Roadmap Development?

A strategy roadmap is a bridge (or link) between strategy and execution. It visualizes the critical outcomes of the operational resilience effort that must be delivered over a particular time horizon to achieve the organization’s strategic vision.

The outcomes on the strategy roadmap are substantiated by a clear understanding of the organization’s capabilities; gaps and priorities must be addressed.

Hence, it starts with a clear Operational Resilience vision and strategy.

Operational Resilience Vision

  • Define a target outcome and target date to achieve the organization OR goal.
  • Link to overall corporate or business unit vision
  • Translate outcome to measurable quantities
  • Set and choose parameters to define OR
Operational Resilience Strategy

  • Set out the route map to achieve the organisation's vision
  • Consistent with the overall business strategy
  • Take into account organisational constraints such as resources and competing programmes.

Operational Resilience Vision and Strategy

Good vision and strategy will align internal and external stakeholders.  It will allow the OR approach and direction to be communicated to the rest of your employees.

How to Develop an Operational Resilience Strategy Roadmap?

The first step in implementing operational resilience is to develop a comprehensive strategy and roadmap. This involves:

Assess Current State

Conduct a thorough assessment of the organization's current operational resilience capabilities, including existing processes, technology infrastructure, and risk management practices. Identify any gaps or areas for improvement.

This is conducted during the previous stage, "Perform Gap Analysis."

Define Objectives

Clearly articulate the objectives of the operational resilience program.

These objectives should align with the organization's overall business goals and risk appetite.

Examples of objectives may include minimizing the impact of disruptions, ensuring timely recovery, and maintaining regulatory compliance.

Engage Stakeholders
  • Engage key organisational stakeholders, including senior management, business units, IT, risk management, and compliance.
  • Seek their input and involvement in the development of the strategy and roadmap.

This will help ensure buy-in and support throughout the implementation process.

Develop Roadmap
  • Create a detailed roadmap that outlines the specific initiatives, milestones, and timelines for implementing operational resilience.
  • Prioritise the initiatives based on their impact and feasibility.
  • Consider factors such as resource availability, budget constraints, and regulatory requirements.
