Body of Knowledge Vs Competency Level
Operational Resilience
The training and certification content within BCM Institute is based on the three phases of the OR planning methodology.
The knowledge is transcribed and aligned directly as the three BoK domains and the 15 OR Body of Knowledge.
As our participants are participating in our courses at different levels, we must identify the level of competency that these budding or senior professionals should be pursuing.
This blog explains the inter-relationship between the BoK and the desired competency level.
OR Body of Knowledge (BoK)
The OR Body of Knowledge or OR BoK is an all-inclusive term that describes the sum of knowledge within the Operational Resilience (OR) and Operational Resilience Audit (ORA) profession.
Since it is usually not possible to put the whole body of knowledge of even a discipline, such as an Operational Resilience (OR), into a single document, there is a need for a Guide to the OR Body of Knowledge (BoK).
This OR BoK guide deposited in BCMPedia seeks to identify and describe the three OR domains and their subset of the body of knowledge that is generally accepted, even though the professionals must be knowledgeable not only in BCM Audit, BCM, CC, CM, DR or OR but also, of course, in other related disciplines.
The ORA Body of Knowledge or BoK is categorised into three BoK domains, starting from 1 to 3, respectively. Each domain will have an additional five Body of Knowledge..

Competency Level (CL)
Each BoK is further divided into three levels of competency or CL. They are the:
- Foundation (leading to "Planner" Level certification);
- Intermediate (leading to "Specialist" Level certification); and
- Advanced (leading to "Expert" Level certification).
The only exception is the OR Audit course, which starts from:
- Intermediate leading to "Auditor" Level certification; and
- Advanced leading to "Expert Auditor" Level certification.

It is helpful to determine which level of competency you are attending. You can learn more by asking, "What is OR Competency Level (CL)?"
Competency Level (CL) is developed upon understanding how potential candidates acquire knowledge.
Level | Expertise | Competency |
1 | Know | Foundation |
2 | Do | Intermediate |
3 | Manage | Advanced |
The Competency Level (CL) is a set of building blocks for BCM Institute's training and certification requirements. Each subject domain is broken into three distinct levels:
- Foundation (CL 1)
- Intermediate (CL 2)
- Advanced (CL 3)
Their breakdown for each of the knowledge domains is as follows:
Know | Do | Manage | ||
Course Type | Code | Competency Level | ||
Operational Resilience | ORA | CL 1OR | CL 2ORA | CL 3OR |
Operational Resilience Audit | ORA | CL 1ORA | CL 2ORA | CL 3ORA |
The arrangement of the tiers represents the increasing specificity and specialization of the Operational Resilience (OR) and Operational Resilience (ORA) skills and knowledge content.
