Step 6: Manage the DR Planning Process

Break the Project into Phases

Even with a limited scope, a DR Planning project effort will remain a major undertaking. The DR Planning project should be broken down into discrete phases in the hopes of keeping it manageable.

The DR Planning process or methodology provides an essential overview of such phases. Like another planning process, it offers a framework for requirements, effort, and deliverables, each leading into the next "phase" of an endlessly repeating cycle. In real life, many of these phases may be conducted simultaneously.

While this process does provide visual clues as to the amount of time and changing emphasis within a phase, these are for reference and do not represent an absolute percentage of the time.

DR Planning Process or Methodology

The DR Planning process and the term in bracket is the equivalent in the BCM Planning Methodology.   As explained earlier includes the following phases:

• Project Management
• IT Risk Analysis and Review [Risk Analysis and Review]
• Application Impact Analysis [Business Impact Analysis]
• DR Strategy and Solutions [BC Strategy]
• IT DR Plan Development [Plan Development]
• Testing and Exercising
• Program Management
  
  

Alignment to BCM Planning Methodology

You would have noticed that this is aligned to the BCM planning methodology.  The reason is that all of our training program and inter-related and BCM Institute advocate the working and sharing of content developed within each phases with your counterpart. 

In this case, if the BCM team had developed it businessmen impact analysis (BIA) already, it is imperative that you as an IT DR professional request for this document.  The critical IT application and system are usually identified already by the respective business units except for its detailed technical system inter-dependencies.
