Content of Business Impact Analysis (BIA) Questionnaires Submission

This article is a compilation of how the answers are completed in the BIA Questionnaires.  This is not the model answer but rather to assist the workshop participants in having better confidence that the answer is close to the desired submission.

  • What are "business functions" in my department or business units?  Give me examples when I complete the templates.
  • Click the icon on the right to review a comprehensive list of business functions within a bank.  This list will provide you with a good idea of what a "business function" is and a "business function code" with a "description" of the activity.

  • What are the "Impact Area"? There are seven types, and this example is marked as "Financial".  Click the icon on the right to find the seven types)
  • What if I do not have any impact area classified as "Financial"?  Insert a dash "-" or "hyphen" in Column 5 and 6 "Financial Impact" to indicate that the two fields are not needed.

Frequently Asked Questions for completing the template (Part 4).

  1. Score "1" to "5" for all "Impact Over Time" in Columns 5 to 16.  Do not leave any blanks.
  2. Your scale is not designed correctly if you scored "5" within the first four columns.  Speak to your Organization's BCM Coordinator.
  3. You must score "1", "3", and "5" on the scale accurately.
  4. Stop scoring when you reach the first "5" - in the picture, it is blackened to illustrate, and there is no requirement for you to blacken the boxes.

  • What is RTO, and what is System RTO?
    • System RTO implies that when the system is fully recovered, some data may not be recovered when the application system is fully recovered.
    • The data is either not backed up in time, or it is created manually and hence, has to be re-created back to the system.

  • What is "downstream"? If you are "downstream" to another business function or process, the entry in Column 4 "Business Unit or Vendor/ Supplier ..." is your upstream.  It can be your internal department, vendor, suppliers, etc.
  • What happens if we are both upstream and downstream dependent? Create another row and insert your function as upstream and the other business function as downstream.  The important information is the last Column 7 "Description on Nature of Dependency" which is what information, data or services is rendered to the downstream business function.

  • What is a Vital Record?  It can be "soft" or digital? or "hard" as and in the hard documents.  The critical task is ensuring these vital records can be recovered or replicated and kept offsite if they are still in the paper form.
