What is Expertise Level? Know-Do-Manage

Two building blocks support our participants' learning journey, linking closely to the BCM Body of Knowledge (BCM BoK) and the OR Body of Knowledge (OR BoK).

One component is the Expertise Level (EL), and the other is the Competency Level (CL).

Expertise Level

All training syllabi within BCM Institute have been designed to assist professionals in upgrading their competency using the "Know, Do and Manage" Expertise Level.

This expertise level applies to the respective areas within BCM Institute's five discipline domains.   This includes  ISO22301 BCMS Audit (A), business continuity (B), crisis communication (CC), crisis management (C), disaster recovery (DR) or operational resilience (OR).

Professionals who want to be acknowledged for their fundamental understanding of a given discipline.  It usually includes personnel involved in the project or program but is led by a designated BCM professional.  Often, it could be a senior management member who oversees the program. This person requires the knowledge but does not need to learn the requirements to implement.

For example, the Business Unit BCM Coordinator at the department or division level and for senior management is led by the Organisation BCM Coordinator.

Professionals who need to have a good understanding and be trained on the intricacies and maintenance of their organization's plans, whether for A, B, C, CC or DR, must have the "Do" expertise level.  To obtain any of the disciplines’ Specialist level certification, one has to have at least one year of experience in the discipline of choice, pay an application fee and pass the relevant qualifying examination.

For professionals tasked to oversee and manage the organisation’s plans and would like to know how to implement, manage and maintain the plans.

They will be given the Expert certification only upon passing the appropriate qualifying Expert examination, having at least three years of experience, and paying an application fee.

The Competency Level (CL) is a set of building blocks for BCM Institute's training and certification requirements. Each subject domain is broken into three distinct levels:

  1. Foundation (CL 1)
  2. Intermediate (CL 2)
  3. Advanced (CL 3)

The breakdown for each of the domains is as follows:

  • [A] [BCM Audit] CL 1B, CL 2A and CL 3A ;
  • [B} [Business Continuity Management] CL 1B, CL 2B and CL 3B;;
  • [C] [Crisis Management] CL 1C, CL 2C and CL 3C for crisis management domain
  • [CC] [Crisis Communication] CL 1CC, CL 2CC and CL 3CC; and
  • [DR} [Disaster Recovery] CL 1D, CL 2D and CL 3D.

The breakdown for each of the three competency levels for operational resilience is as follows:
  • [OR] [Operational Resilience] CL 1OR, CL 2OR and CL 3OR; and
  • [ORA] [Operational Resilience Audit] CL 1ORA, CL 2ORA and CL 3ORA.
