Develop BCM Structure

This series is part of the reading for participants embarking on a BCM implementation or update journey using training and supported by a BCM professional team to develop, implement and finalize its BCM program for an organisation.  This second instalment entails the development of the BCM organisation's structure and BCM framework.

Our Training-led BCM implementation course comprises a series of phases.  Making it simple, it is a series of three BCM courses with the course code: BCM-310; BCM-320 and BCM-330

The Organisation BCM Coordinator consolidates the findings as a report for each phase.  This report is approved by management and will be utilized in the next phase with group workshops, team discussions, assessments and messages.

The current BCM program management office or the designated BCM project management team are expected to attend the onsite 2-day or online 2 Module (comprising of four 3-hour sessions) BCM Project Initiation course.

The course is BCM-410 BCM Project Initiation.

Once the project initiation course or BM-410 is completed, the following schedule will start with the BCM-310, BCM-320 and BCM-330 for the BU BCM Coordinators.  They are expected to complete in 5 of the 7 phases of the BCM planning methodology.

BCM Planning Methodology

The 5 (of the 7) main phases or better known as the Business Continuity Management (BCM) Planning Methodology are:

  • Risk analysis and review
  • Business impact analysis
  • Business continuity strategy
  • Plan development
  • Testing and exercising

Each phase is structured to optimize the allocated time and maximize learning through supplementary readings and offline discussions.

Depending on the size and complexity of the organization, the implementation of each phase could last anywhere from 3 weeks to 1 month (elapsed time).  The only exception is the Testing and Exercising phase.

Business Unit BCM Coordinator

When you are nominated to represent your business units (or departments/ division), you are designated as the business unit BCM coordinators (BUC).  The standard BCM project implementation involves training appointed business unit BCM coordinators to plan and execute tests and exercises for their respective departments, and this takes just 1 or 2 weeks.  The key is to equip you with the BCM knowledge to effectively "contextualise" your business functions, products and/or services to the BCM planning process.

At times, your organisation would request that we conduct the tests and exercises on their behalf, which would lengthen the time needed. Typically a project running on BCM-310-320-330 modules may have a duration of between 5 to 7 months, depending on the availability of resources and scheduling.

Handbooks and templates (soft copies) are distributed (downloaded) to project participants at the start of each training-led implementation module before the workshop. In addition, supplementary reading materials will be provided via email or electronic portal.

Participants are encouraged to use these just-in-time, bite-size materials to support their learning. More in-depth discussions and questions may be raised during the group workshop or subsequent consultation sessions.

You are ready to start with the first "Running A Risk Assessment" workshop.
